About Construction Career Days
As more people relocate to or visit Florida, the demand for qualified construction workers grows. The booming population calls for additional housing, business expansion, and improved roadways. Rapid population growth and expansion require skilled workers, so now is the time to join the construction industry.
Transportation industry officials responded in 1999 by creating Construction Career Days. The nationwide educational outreach program is designed to cultivate interest in high school students for a wide variety of skilled construction careers. The local events give students the chance to get a feel for the field by participating in activities like operating machinery and speaking to experienced industry veterans.
The 2024 event is the 11th Annual Construction Career Days held for District Two/Northeast Florida. This event is organized by transportation industry partners from the public and private sectors. Last year’s event encompassed high schools from 14 of the 18 counties from the district.
With this also being our 11th year doing this, we often forget that people, especially those who are new to this event, don’t necessarily understand our lingo or what the differences are in participation levels. There are a lot of moving parts so hopefully you will find this information informative and helpful. We appreciate all of you for your continued support with this wildly successful event.
Learning Labs & Career Centers
Learning Labs are a fun and interactive 20-25 minute educational experience hosted by construction professionals that provide real world demonstrations of technology and techniques. Discussions also take place that include the skills needed to reach high compensation careers in the construction industry.
Each Learning labs is set-up Monday and each lab provides a 20-minute presentation repeated from 8am-3pm (times may vary) on Tuesday and Thursday.
The Career Center area is similar to a “Job Fair” and provides an opportunity for students to choose which construction-related companies, business, and schools they want to learn more about. Career Center participants set-up tables with brochures, display items, pamphlets, videos, freebie gifts, and hands-on activities to inform students about existing or upcoming educational programs, apprenticeships, internships, and job options. Career Center participants are encouraged to provide students with general information and answer questions to allow students to get to know more about the company, school, or job field in general. Student groups are allowed to freely roam the Career Center area for 25 minutes each.
Note: Every Exhibitor will be required to provide a hands-on activity during the event. The activity can be related to your company or not.
